Grace Church, along
with other Episcopal Churches in the Shenandoah Valley
(Region XIV of the Diocese of Virginia), has entered into a
companion relationship with the Diocese of Central Buganda,
in Uganda. Our Rector is an honorary Canon of the Cathedral of St.
John, Kasaka, Uganda.
Through this companionship, we have had their Bishop
(The Rt. Rev. Dr. George Sinabulya) visit us on
three occasions, preaching in the churches of the Region and
cementing the relationship between the Christians here and
there. Canon Brown has also made three trips to Uganda. We
have raised funds to build a
Guest
House and Conference Center at the Cathedral there; we
have provided bicycles for their clergy, we offer support
for their orphanages, and we are providing for the costs
involved in sending a young man through Seminary to be
ordained a Priest in Uganda.

| In the Spring of 1998 we at Grace Church held an
auction to raise funds to help buy food and clothing for
orphans whose parents have died of disease in our companion
Diocese in Central Buganda, Uganda. The auction brought in
over $4000, of which after expenses we were able to send
almost $3000 to help the orphans. In addition, Grace Church contributed
another $3000 to buy a motorcycle for the Rev. Kezlon Kiwanuka
Semanda, the Diocesan Secretary and Sub-Dean of St. John's Cathedral,
Kasaka, and to buy bicycles for 31 lay-readers to
cover all 31 parishes of the Diocese. |

We have all - here and in Uganda - gained tremendously
through this companionship. It has greatly expanded our
vision of God's greatness and love, enabling us to see Him
at work in the lives of people so far from here, and living
under such different circumstances. It has enabled us to
realize the vastness of God's Creation, and of His mercy and
love. It has helped us to put into action His call that we
love our neighbors as ourselves. |
