Region 14
Welcome to Region XIV
We are a part of the congregations and and other ministries of The Episcopal Church in and near The Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. The Shenandoah Valley stretches 200 miles across the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains. Region 14 is a part of The Diocese of Virginia.
Region 14 of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia includes the 19 congregations and ministries in the Shenandoah Valley: Calvary, Front Royal; Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration, Orkney Springs; Christ Church, Luray; Christ Church, Winchester; Christ the King, Harrisonburg; Cunningham Chapel Parish, Millwood; Emmanuel, Harrisonburg; Emmanuel, Woodstock; Good Shepherd Church, Bluemont; Grace Church, Berryville; Grace Memorial, Port Republic; Meade Memorial, White Post; St. Andrew's, Mount Jackson; St. George's, Stanley; St. Mary's, Berryville; St. Paul's, Shenandoah, St. Paul's on-the-Hill, Winchester; St. Stephen and the Good Shepherd, Elkton & Canterbury Episcopal Campus Ministry (James Madison University), Harrisonburg.
Our Region XIV delegates for St. Mary’s ('11/'12) are Maurita Powell and Edwina Mason while Don De Haven and Jim Thorne represent Grace Church. The Regional Council also has a Dean appointed by the bishop for a four year term and a president elected by the council. The Regions serve to enable the churches to offer ministries together that we could not offer individually. The Regions are also key to the communications between neighboring parishes and between churches and the diocese.
Each church contributes to the Region XIV budget, which is about $14,000. We have three primary projects: (1) we help support the campus ministry at James Madison University, where the diocese owns a house used for worship and student gatherings, Bible studies, etc. The diocese also employs a full-time priest for campus ministry. (2) We participate in an annual pilgrimage to a Lakota Indian Reservation and run a summer Bible school there. (3) We have an ongoing companion relationship with the Diocese of Central Buganda in Uganda. Several of our clergy and lay people have made visits to Uganda, (including your rector and his wife) and their bishop has made numerous visits to our region.
